Description

This book is the outcome of a project entitled ‘Visions of Steel’, the aim of which was to involve members of the community in Port Talbot in identifying and interpreting a large collection of historic photographic images documenting the history of the steel industry in Port Talbot. These fragile images, captured on plate glass and dating from the 1940s and early 1950s, were discovered by  members of the Port Talbot Historical Society who recognised their significance as a record of industrial life in the town.

With the help of People’s Collection Wales the entire collection was digitised, and then a larger group including staff from Swansea University History department, the National Waterfront Museum, The Richard Burton Archives, and West Glamorgan Archive Service worked together to identify the content of the photographs.

This volume sees the photographs displayed and discussed, alongside artwork from pupils at Sandfields Comprehensive School inspired by the photos.

West Glamorgan Archive Service, 2017.  62 pages, paperback (A4).
