Description
At just twenty-seven Isambard Kingdom Brunel was appointed as engineer of Great Western Railway and just over a year later he carried out the first surveys for what would become the Taff Vale Railway. This, and his later broad gauge railways played a major role in the worldwide export of South Wales coal, the preferred choice of fuel for Brunel’s railways and steamships.
This third volume focuses on the maritime side of Brunel’s work. As well as docks and shipping places there are the associations with his steamships such as the ‘great leviathan’, the PSS Great Eastern, for which Brunel chose Neyland, the terminus of his South Wales Railway, as a home port.
This illustrated history delves deep into Brunel’s maritime legacy.
