A Vision Fulfilled: the story of Celtic Studios and Swansea’s architectural glass tradition

This book tells the story of Wales’ first stained glass firm, Celtic Studios of Swansea.

Its genesis was in the partnership of cousins Howard Martin and Hubert Thomas from Morriston in Swansea. After the war, they opened Celtic Studios in the
heart of Swansea with Martin as chief designer and Thomas as studio director.

For over forty years, they produced a steady output of stained glass windows for churches in Wales and England, but also further afield, most notably in Canada.

The eventual decline of the Studios is set in the narrative against the innovative development of architectural glass which Howard Martin led at Swansea College of Art.

Today Swansea is recognised as an international centre for architectural glass – a vision fulfilled.
